SIAS

The Sias family are French in origin, the name originally being Sieyes. The Sieyes family were Protestants and when Louis XIV became king they were subjected to severe religious persecution by the ruling Catholics.  Many of this family left France and fled to Protestant countries like England, Germany and Holland.

1. JEAN SIEYES was likely born about 1655 and appears to have gone to England where he was impressed into service with the British Navy. In 1675 when Jean Sieyes' ship docked at Boston he deserted and fled into the woods. He lived with the Indians for a while and later turned up at Wells in Maine. In early New England records the name appears as John Size or Cyas but was eventually Americanized into Sias.  John Sias married Sarah Ann Pitman in 1698 and they settled at Durham, New Hampshire. John Sias died after 1716 and his wife died after 1734. John and Sarah Sias had 8 children including a son:

2. JOHN SIAS Jr was born about 1706 at Durham, New Hampshire and he married Hannah Sampson on July 16, 1728. They lived at Durham and later Canterbury in New Hampshire. It is not known when John Sias Jr died but Hannah (Sampson) Sias died in 1794 at Danville, Vermont. John and Hannah Sias had 4 children including a son:

3. CHARLES SIAS was born in 1742 at Durham, New Hampshire and about 1763 he married Jane McCrillis. They lived at Canterbury and moved to Louden about 1773. Charles Sias served in his brother Benjamin's company during the Revolutionary War. After the war they moved to first Peacham and then Danville, Vermont. In 1802 Charles Sias purchased land at West Derby overlooking beautiful Lake Memphremagog.  Jane (McCrillis) sias died on March 9, 1813 and Charles sias died on March 7, 1837 both at West Derby.  Charles and Jane Sias had 10 children including a son:

4. SOLOMON SIAS was born about 1765 at Canterbury, New Hampshire and about 1789 he married Delinda Eveline Collingwood at Danville, Vermont. They lived at Danville until about 1830 when they moved to Otto Township in Cataraugus County, New York. Solomon died there on May 31, 1856. Solomon and Delinda Sias had 6 children including a son:

5. SYLVENUS SIAS was born on May 14, 1806 at Danville, Vermont and he moved to Cataraugus County New York with his parents.  Sylvenus married Julia McFarlin in 1832. They lived at Otto Township until 1837 when the moved to Chatham, Ontario, Canada. They lived there for several years and by 1850 had moved to Locke Township in Ingham County, Michigan. Sylvenus Sias had moved to Pine river Township in Gratiot County by 1855 and he purchased 160 acres of government land there in 1857. Sylvenus Sias died on May 14, 1890 at St Louis, Michigan. Sylvenus and Julia Sias had 4 children including a daughter:  

6. DELINDA EVELINE SIAS was born on February 11, 1838 at Chatham, Ontario, Canada and she moved to Michigan with her parents. Delinda first married Martin W Cramer  on October 28, 1855 at Pine River Township in Gratiot county and they lived in Bethany Township. Delinda and Martin were divorced about 1875 and she married second, John J VanHellen. They were living in Pine River Township in 1880 and moved to Briley Township in Montmorency County in the 1890's. in 1897 John VanHellen homesteaded 160 acres near Pug Lakes. He died there on July 9, 1903. After 1910 Delinda moved out west and she died on April 10, 1921 at Polson, Lake County, Montana. By Martin Cramer Delinda had 9 children and by John VanHellen she had one child, George Henry VanHellen, who was born on July 23, 1878 at Pine River Township.
