BADGROW
The Badgrow family is said to be French in origin, the name originally being Bergereau. There are two theories of how the Bergereau's came to this country at the time of the Revolutionary War. One is that they came with the Marquis de Lafayette in 1777. The other is that they first came to Canada and then came to this country to fight the British. After the war several of the Bergereau war veterans settled here in New York and Vermont. The name was Americanized to Badgerow or Badgero which are the most common spellings. My grandfather shortened his surname to Badgrow after the Civil War. In French Canada the name appears as Bergeron. Many of the Badgerow family moved to near Toronto, Canada between 1800 and the 1830.
